Famous for being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the capital of the Costa del Sol is an international city that has established itself as a centre for gastronomy and culture. Colourful and atmospheric, Malaga is a welcoming maritime city on the Mediterranean coast.

THE CATHEDRAL
Consecrated under the protection of Santa Maria de la Encarnación, Malaga’s cathedral is one of three large Andalusian Renaissance churches. Built on the site of an Aljama mosque, its construction began in the 16th century. One of the towers was left unfinished and is the reason behind its nickname, La Manquita (one-armed).
THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
Just outside the city, La Concepción Garden is one of Andalusia’s most significant botanical hubs. It was built in 1850 by an aristocratic couple, the Marquis of Casa Loring and his wife. They wanted to recreate the environment of the tropical forests found on the Mediterranean coastline.
ALCAZABA
A fortress overlooking the sea, Alcazaba is the city’s main monument from the Arabic period. This 11th-century palace sits at the foot of the Gibralfaro hill, which overlooks the town and bay. Its arches, fountains and courtyards remind us of a period in which the city was subject to a particular influence. The Roman theatre of Malaga is another piece of history; this evidence of the Roman presence in Malaga was only excavated in 1951.
THE PICASSO MUSEUM
The museum houses a remarkable collection of more than 200 pieces from the most influential artist of the 20th century. Picasso wanted the city where he was born to have a share of his work. Oil paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, ceramics and illustrations showcase the developing styles of Malaga’s great celebrity.
ATARAZANAS CENTRAL MARKET
A daily market takes place in this 19th-century building. See unique metallic architecture and a door from the Muslim period, which once connected the city to the port. Magnificent stained glass windows depict the city’s famous sites, setting the scene for the market, which comes to life every morning.
