URBAN ART OUTDOORS

In recent years, Munich has become popular amongst urban art fans. Public art appeared in the streets, and work from graffiti artists with diverse styles can be seen from one end of the city to the other. Why not soak up the atmosphere of Schwanthalerhöhe? This district is a favourite among street artists and home to many immigrant communities. International restaurants, street food and local bars offer an authentic taste of modern Munich. Explore art galleries in Schwanthalerhöhe, or visit the independent venues and theatres the area is famous for. Street art fans should head to the MUCA, Germany’s first museum dedicated to this contemporary art form. In a former-power plant setting, admire the works of Aiko, Banksy, Dran and Zeus, some of the biggest names in street art. Around the Isar, the river that runs through the city, many bridges and underpasses are canvases for graffiti artists. Brudermühlbrücke bridge is one of the most famous for the graffiti adorning its concrete blocks. Known for its vast transport network, Munich also offers an art display on its metro. Some stations are outstanding and worth stopping to admire. At Münchner Freiheit, the yellow walls and illuminated neon-blue pillars reflect light onto mirrors in the ceiling, plunging passengers into a bright and ultra-modern environment. A glass dome bathes St-Quirin-Platz metro station in natural light, unmissable for immersive art fans. Don’t forget to admire the sculptures at Lehel station, where replicas of artwork can be seen on the walls.

MARIENPLATZ

The nerve centre of this Bavarian city, this square is the location of numerous celebrations and public events, traditional restaurants and souvenir shops. It’s home to the City Hall, one of Munich’s most distinctive neo-Gothic buildings. In winter, it’s transformed into a huge Christmas market.

HOFBRÄUHAUS

A must-see in Munich, the world’s most famous beer hall welcomes locals and tourists to sample Bavarian specialities. Hofbräu beer that flows freely. Music, dancing and traditional costumes are also served in the tavern-style rooms.

THE ENGLISH GARDEN

More than 400 hectares make up Munich’s English garden, making it one of the world’s biggest urban parks. Walking paths are punctuated by gardens and unexpected buildings, like the pagoda-style Chinese tower. A manufactured canal also runs through this oasis of greenery in the city.

NYMPHENBURG PALACE

Visit the summer residence of Bavarian kings to soak up the history and culture and enjoy a walk through nature. The impressive palace building overlooks spectacular gardens featuring numerous sculptures and charming pavilions. Make the most of your walk and wander to the carriage and porcelain museums.

VIKTUALIENMARKT

The well-stocked stalls of one of Europe’s best outdoor markets draw you in and are sure to make you hungry. The Viktualienmarkt boasts more than 100 stalls, serving tempting food, flowers and traditional Bavarian crafted items.
