The Canton of Ticino is home to the charming city of Lugano. Right on the lake, it’s the perfect place to stay for a few days of relaxation in an enchanting setting with a distinctively Mediterranean feel. Overlooked by mountains, Lugano and the surrounding areas are ideal for picturesque walks and spectacular views.

A COUNTRY WALK AROUND LUGANO

You reach the romantic village of Gandria by boat from Lugano. A true oasis of tranquillity, this fishing village is nestled at the foot of Monte Brè on the edge of Lake Lugano. Wander down its narrow streets and pretty steps. Feel free to go into the Church of San Vigilio in the central square to admire its exceptional Baroque interior. Sample delicious Ticinese cuisine for lunch at one of the lake’s little grottos. Admire the nature and the natural scenery of the gulf of Lugano. Next, stroll along the Olive Grove Trail to Castagnola. This three-kilometre path is a beautiful walk along the lake, amongst palm, prickly pear and olive trees. Several plaques explain the area’s history, botany and the cultivation of the olive trees along the way. Many tree species are found in this area, not to mention the remains of ancient olive groves. The Carlin olive tree is unmissable. Near the jetty at Gandria, the 10-metre tree overlooks the lake. In summer, enjoy a swim in the Lido San Domenico, where the scenery is spellbinding. At the trail’s end, take the path to the Castagnola nature park. Its tracks and small steep steps climb up amongst olive, cypress and bay trees. This Mediterranean fauna thrives in the region’s mild climate. Walking on the hill is an absolute pleasure. Look for Lugano wine-growing region and its 2,400 Merlot vines!

VILLA DEL BALBIANELLO

In the small village of Lenno on the banks of Lake Como, the Villa del Balbianello is an exceptionally stylish Renaissance-style villa. You can reach the private pontoon by boat in just a few minutes. From there, access this romantic location where several scenes from Casino Royal were filmed. Plus, romantic scenes in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.

LAKE LUGANO

Around the lake, the view of the mountains is spectacular, while peaceful waters help you relax. The lake has so much to offer, from boating and swimming to picnics and drinks. Jump into Switzerland with both feet at the Swissminiatur park, home to miniature replicas of 120 Swiss buildings, monuments and locations.

MONTE SAN SALVATORE

Lugano’s ‘Sugarloaf Mountain’ overlooks the district of Paradisio, and there’s a beautiful walk up to the summit. A funicular also goes up to the top. Climb the steps that lead to the church. Monte San Salvatore deserves its nickname, the ‘Top of Lugano’, with panoramic views that are sure to take your breath away.

On the banks of Lake Como, this neoclassical Italian villa is a rare beauty. It includes a museum famous for its exceptional and lush botanical garden. Meander amongst the roses, camellias, hydrangeas and colourful tropical plants.

MONTE BRÈ

The summit of Monte Brè can be reached by foot or funicular. It’s worth it for the magnificent views from the lookout point. The lake, the city and the bay stretch out before you, surrounded by mountains and the snowy peaks of the Alps. A visit to the picturesque artists’ village of Brè and its sculptures is also worth the trip.
